Leather Care

Vegetable-tanned leather is one of the most durable and low-maintenance materials you can own — and with a little care, it only gets better with age. This guide covers everything you need to keep your Cozy Handmade leather goods in good condition for years to come.
01
Cleaning & Conditioning
To remove dirt and unwanted marks, apply a small amount of saddle soap and wipe with a clean cloth. Always follow with a leather conditioner after cleaning to replenish any lost oils.
Neatsfoot oil or any natural conditioner cream works well — apply a thin, even coat, leave it for a few hours, then buff off the excess with a cloth using circular motions.
As a general guide, conditioning once every 6–12 months is sufficient. The natural oils from your hands will condition the leather gradually over time — if the leather still looks lustrous, there's nothing to worry about.
Vegetable-tanned leather will darken slightly after conditioning — this is normal and part of the leather's natural ageing process.

Water & Moisture
Leather is porous and can never be fully waterproofed. If your strap or leather good gets wet, dab it dry with a cloth and allow it to dry naturally — never use direct heat.
Once dry, apply a leather conditioner and leave it overnight for full absorption, then wipe off any excess.
What to Avoid
To keep your leather in the best condition, avoid the following:
- Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or heat — this dries out the leather and causes cracking
- Prolonged exposure to water or moisture
- Harsh chemical cleaners or alcohol-based products
- Storing in airtight bags for extended periods — leather needs to breathe
A Note on Patina
Over time, your full grain vegetable-tanned leather will develop a rich personal patina — a natural deepening of tone and character that reflects how and where you've worn it. This is not wear and tear — it's the leather maturing.
No two pieces age in exactly the same way, making your Cozy Handmade piece its own kind over time.

Removing Minor Scratches
Minor surface scratches on vegetable-tanned leather are easier to deal with than you might expect. Apply a thin layer of leather conditioner over the scratched area, then buff it gently with a canvas cloth using circular motions.
Buffing will cause the leather to darken slightly in the treated area — this is a natural characteristic of vegetable-tanned leather. Over time, as the rest of the leather develops its patina, the tone will even out naturally.
Watch our short video guide below to see the technique in action.
This technique applies to quality vegetable-tanned leather only and works best on minor surface scratches. Results may vary depending on the depth of the scratch.
